Why your photo gets a Made with AI label
You upload a photo and the platform puts a small "Made with AI" or "AI info" tag on it. Often the picture is not AI-generated at all: you edited it, or exported it from a tool that writes provenance data. The label almost always comes from the file's metadata, not from anything the platform sees in the image.
Where the label comes from
Platforms read the file's provenance fields on upload. Three things trigger a label:
- A C2PA Content Credential saying the file was generated or edited by AI.
- An XMP field, usually
digitalSourceTypeset totrainedAlgorithmicMedia. - IPTC tags describing the digital source, written by some editors.
This is why an ordinary photo can get labelled. Use a generative fill, a sky replacement or an AI denoise on a real photograph, and the editor may write a credential saying AI was involved. The tag is accurate about the tooling, but it reads to viewers as "this picture is fake".
Removing the fields
Drop the file into the Images tab and press Clean. The C2PA manifest, XMP provenance and IPTC digital-source tags are all removed. Upload the cleaned copy instead of the original and the automatic label usually does not appear, because there is nothing left for the platform to read.
Verify before you rely on it: run the cleaned file through the Metadata tab and confirm the provenance fields are gone.
When it will not help
Be clear-eyed about the limits, because two cases are commonly misunderstood.
A pixel watermark is not metadata. If the image came from a generator that embeds SynthID or a similar signal in the pixels, that survives cleaning, and a platform that checks for it can still label the file. Why that is is worth two minutes.
Classifiers do not read metadata at all. Some platforms run a detector over the image itself. Cleaning the file has no effect on that, because the detector never looked at the tags.
Worth saying plainly
Removing these fields is the right fix when a genuine photograph is being mislabelled because of the software that touched it. It is not a way to pass generated work off as a photograph, and it will not reliably do that: the pixel evidence and any classifier are both untouched. This tool removes a record; it does not change what the picture is.
Common questions
Why does my real photo say Made with AI?
Because an editor wrote provenance data into the file. Using generative fill, sky replacement or AI denoise on a genuine photograph can add a C2PA credential or an XMP digitalSourceType field, and platforms read those on upload.
How do I remove the Made with AI label?
Clean the file in the Images tab, which removes the C2PA manifest, XMP provenance and IPTC digital-source tags, then upload the cleaned copy. With nothing left to read, the automatic label usually does not appear.
Will removing metadata always remove the label?
No. If the platform runs a classifier over the image itself, or the image carries a pixel watermark such as SynthID, cleaning the metadata changes nothing for either.
