Check My Metadata read and remove hidden file data

Legal

Terms and conditions

Plain terms for a free tool. This page says what the service is, what you may use it for, and what it does not promise. It is not a substitute for legal advice.

What this is

Check My Metadata reads and removes hidden data from files you upload: metadata, provenance records and invisible characters. It is offered as-is.

Access is currently free and needs no account. That may change: accounts and paid allowances are planned. Any change applies from the date it is published here, never retroactively, and it will not change what happens to an uploaded file.

Use it on your own material

Only upload files you own or are authorised to process. Do not use this service to break the law, to infringe someone else's rights, or to misrepresent the origin of work that is not yours.

Removing a Content Credential or a generator tag removes a record. It does not change what a file is, and it is not a way to pass generated work off as a photograph. What you do with a cleaned file is your responsibility.

No promise that a file becomes untraceable

This is the term that matters most, and the site is deliberate about it. Metadata is removed reliably. Marks embedded in the content itself are not, and some cannot be removed by anyone:

So a cleaned file is not a mark-free file, and nothing here should be relied on to make content anonymous, untraceable or undetectable. If that is what you need, this is not the right tool, and we would rather tell you than take the traffic.

No warranty

The service is provided without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Files are processed automatically and results are not reviewed by a person. Always keep your original and check the result yourself: the Metadata tab exists for exactly that.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of this service, including lost or corrupted files, missed removals, or any consequence of publishing a file you cleaned here. Your original is never modified, so the safe habit is to keep it.

Availability

This is a free service on a small server. There is no uptime guarantee. Upload sizes and the number of files processed at once are capped so one visitor cannot exhaust it, and those limits may change. Access may be rate-limited or withdrawn for abuse.

Your files

Uploads are written to a temporary folder, processed for that one request and deleted. They are never stored, logged or shared. The privacy page sets out exactly what happens, including what the web server's access log records and how long it is kept.

Changes

These terms may be updated as the service changes. Continued use after a change means you accept the current version.

Common questions

Is Check My Metadata free to use?

Access is currently free and needs no account, with no upload quota beyond the per-file size caps that stop one visitor exhausting the server. Accounts and paid allowances are planned, and this page will be updated before they go live.

Does the service guarantee a file is untraceable after cleaning?

No. Metadata is removed reliably, but marks embedded in the content itself, such as SynthID or a visible moving logo, are not removed and in some cases cannot be removed by anyone. A cleaned file is not a mark-free file.

Are uploaded files stored?

No. A file is written to a temporary folder, processed for that one request and deleted immediately afterwards. It is never stored, logged or shared.
